Job description

Just an office job? Only if you ignore the impact.

Are you looking for a summer job that offers more than just a desk and a screen? At CSC, we have dozens of summer positions open for students from various fields who want their work to make a real difference. With us, you’ll get to build your career, work on meaningful projects that impact society, and gain valuable experience with cutting-edge technology and expert services. Our Summer Xperience program connects trainees through networking events and shared activities, helping you build contacts that last.

We are looking for HPC, AI & Data Science Trainees to our Advanced Computing Facility unit. See the detailed job descriptions below and send us your application!

Summer Trainee, HPC Science Support

Our group, Science Support (SCS), has expertise in particular in bioinformatics, chemistry, physics, and we help researchers use and get maximum performance out of the CSC computing capacity for doing science. This we do via high quality online user guide (docs.csc.fi), online tutorials, online and live courses, reaching out and solving support requests via ServiceDesk. While these activities are central in our group we don't do these alone but in collaboration with several other groups at CSC - each with their own focus.

The Summer Trainee focuses on supporting the research use of high-performance computing (HPC) in a "full stack" sense – from analysing support requests via developing training materials to deploying new tools. The exact tasks will be tailored depending on the selected candidate’s interests and strengths.

Key responsibilities for the trainee can include for example:

  • Development of CSC environment course materials

  • Data analysis projects (e.g., evaluating the impact of CSC’s training programs, categorizing support requests)

  • Participation in integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into CSC’s service processes

  • Deployment and user support for research software applying machine learning in CSC’s computing environment

Key competencies we are looking for:

  • Experience in using CSC’s high-performance computing services and interest in supporting its use e.g. in bioinformatics, chemistry, materials science, physics.

  • Linux/bash, container technologies (Apptainer), Python, Git

  • Good communication skills

  • B.Sc. to M.Sc. level studies in natural sciences or engineering

Location: Espoo

Summer Trainee, AI & Machine Learning

The Artificial Intelligence & Data Analytics (AIDA) group is part of a wider unit focused on CSC's science and technology user services. As a group of experts in AI, machine learning and data science, we are responsible for research support on CSC computing platforms. AIDA also offers practical training in machine learning and data analytics, and participates in several leading international and national R&D projects (for example, projects funded by Horizon Europe).

The Summer Trainee will focus on developing CSC support services related to the use of AI and machine learning methods in applied research.

Key responsibilities of the trainee can include, for example:

  • Applications of AI and machine learning in domains such as bioinformatics, chemistry, physics or materials science

  • Contributing to externally funded projects (such as EU-funded projects focused on foundation model development)

  • Participating in training and events depending on the applicant's background and interests

Key competencies we are looking for:

  • Practical experience of applying AI / machine learning methods (e.g. PyTorch) in scientific research

  • Interest in and potential earlier experience of high-performance computing and CSC computing services

  • Experience of Linux / bash and versioning tools (Git)

  • Excellent communication skills

  • B.Sc. to M.Sc. level studies in natural sciences or engineering

Location: Espoo or Kajaani

Summer Trainee, Bioinformatics

Our group is called Tools for Data Driven Sciences (TOOLDS). We have three teams that are responsible for scientific services for bioinformatics, geoinformatics and language technology. All of these services handle large amounts of data, and collaborate with CSC HPC and cloud teams to meet discipline-specific needs that the researchers have.

We are now looking for a Summer Trainee to our Chipster development team. Chipster is a bioinformatics software which provides a web interface for data analysis tools running on CSC's computing infrastructure (https://chipster.csc.fi/).

Key responsibilities for the trainee include:

  • Implementing analysis and visualization tools in Chipster

  • Providing user support material (manual pages, videos) for the new tools

Key competencies we are looking for:

  • R programming, bioinformatics

  • Familiarity with version control and git workflow

  • B.Sc. to M.Sc. level studies in natural sciences or engineering

Location: Espoo
