Job description

LUMI is Europe’s most powerful supercomputer and the fifth fastest supercomputer in the world. LUMI offers European researchers a world-class tool for understanding complicated phenomena, such as climate change. LUMI is owned by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, and it is run by a consortium of 11 countries with long traditions and knowledge of scientific computing. LUMI has been set up in Kajaani, in one of the world’s greenest data centres, hosted by CSC.


As the Operations Manager of the LUMI supercomputer, you will contribute in reaching flawless operations of the supercomputer and thereby generating value for research scientists in academia and industry to address the grand challenges in our society.


What you will be doing:

  • Leading LUMI’s incident, change and problem management processes
  • Liaising with LUMI system administrators, storage administrators, data center team, data center networks team, user support team etc. to be on top of things
  • Providing technical expertise
  • Carrying out the service owner role for certain components of the infrastructure
  • Describing, implementing and optimizing processes
  • Making and implementing operational plans
  • Conducting and developing operations monitoring and reporting
  • Managing performance of the system vendor and related support contracts
  • Handling risk management and ensuring compliance with standards requirements

The role can be based in either Kajaani or Espoo. You will report to the Director of CSC Advanced Computing Facility – Operations and Systems.

Job requirements

We expect you to have solid understanding and experience on service management and/or operations management of complex IT installations. Understanding on high-performance computing infrastructures and data center operations is considered as an asset. You should have a higher education degree in an applicable field.


The role allows for flexibly combining on-premise and remote work. Some travel will be expected. The role is expected to have some on-call duties outside the office hours as part of the 24/7 operations scheme of the system.


The selected candidate will be subject to a basic security clearance. The requirement for the employment relationship is that the security clearance does not reveal any noteworthy factors.
