We are looking for a data engineer to join CSC's Digital Twin Technologies (DTT) group. The selected person will have a key role in Climate Adaptation Digital Twin (Climate DT) project, which is part of the Destination Earth initiative (https://destination-earth.eu/). Climate DT is a novel climate information system that combines climate models and impact models to provide actionable information on climate change. The development of the Climate DT started in September 2022, and currently the focus is on transitioning the system from the initial prototype towards an operational demonstration. Climate DT runs on two  EuroHPC supercomputers: LUMI supercomputer which is hosted by CSC in Kajaani (https://www.lumi-supercomputer.eu/) and MareNostrum5 that is located in Barcelona, Spain, both being among the fastest supercomputers in the world.

Key responsibilities

The main responsibility of this role is to design and implement the deployment of the Climate Digital Twin platform, in close collaboration with an international team of model and workflow developers and other experts. In addition, the tasks involve managing and developing the workflow infrastructure of the Digital Twin and supporting the setup of the test infrastructure for developers, in collaboration with a senior technical expert working at CSC. The tasks also entail technical monitoring of the Digital Twin system running on LUMI and MareNostrum5. The selected expert will work with an international group of experts from various fields, including HPC, climate modelling and software development located in different organizations across Europe. In addition to Climate DT, it is possible to contribute to other projects related to Digital Twins, depending on the interests of the applicant.

Key competencies required for the position include:

  •        very strong Linux skills (Linux administration experience is a plus)

  •        proven experience in IT service design and development

  •        programming and scripting skills (e.g. Python)

  •        deep understanding of container technologies

  •        coordination skills, ability to manage complex systems and solutions

  •        fluent written and oral communication skills in English

  •        strong teamwork skills, ability to collaborate with an international group of people from several organizations

  •        experience in high-performance computing environments and operative/pseudo-operative environments is considered as an asset

We expect you to have an B.Sc., MSc or an equivalent degree in computer science, engineering, or another suitable field. Knowledge of climate science is not required as such. We are seeking a candidate who ideally has few years of relevant work experience.
